Ying Finkle 's blog ::VW about to capture Small Car market
The new season of classic car auctions begins in January, when many of the major auction companies will be holding their premier events. Combined, Barrett-Jackson, Goodings and Company, RM, Russo and Steel, and Mecum will offer 5000 highly sought-after classics to the highest bidders. These cars represent the muscle car era, exotics, limited production models, prototypes, and vehicles made famous by their owners or by their own star power. Barrett-Jackson's Party in the Desert, scheduled from January 13-January 20, will be selling over 1000 cars at its Scottsdale, Arizona auction. The Salon Collection, a group of 18 exclusive vehicles, is expected to generate a lot of excitement, and several of the cars may command prices well north of $1 million. Here are just some of the vehicles from this diverse, high-end collection that will be making news in the New Year. Duesenberg The Salon Collection has two impressive examples of the legendary Duesenberg: A 1934 Model J Murphy LWB Custom Beverly Sedan and a 1929 Model J Murphy Convertible Berline. Both are superior examples of American automotive design in the early 1930s. The more noteworthy of the two, the 1934 Beverly, is stunning in champagne gold, with just the right amount of chrome accents to enhance its beauty. This Duesy has never lost in its more than 10 Concours d'Elegance competitions, and is also an AACA and CCA national prize winner. Delahaye The French car manufacturer, Emile Delahaye, built a one-of-kind coupe for the 1949 Paris auto show, and now this elite car is part of the Sweet 18 collection at Barrett-Jackson. The two-toned Delahaye Type 175 Saoutchik Coupe de Ville, with its custom teardrop design and Targa top, is eye-catching from any angle. Its interior, which is fully optioned, also has 14 karat gold plated fixtures, making it as extraordinary on the inside as it is on the outside. Owned by various collectors throughout the years, this distinctive car has also been on display at car museums around the country. Shelby Mustang Although all Shelby Mustangs are considered to be rarities, the Salon Collection includes one that may be the rarest of them all -- the EXP 500. Carroll Shelby, and his team at Shelby American, used this 1968 coupe, which is actually a Shelby prototype, as the test bed for developing future Shelby Mustangs. Fortunately, this unique part of muscle car history survived, and is the only existing example of its kind. Batmobile Few cars are as widely recognized as the Batmobile, the car Adam West drove around Gotham City in the 1960s television series, "Batman." The well-known customizer, George Barris, created this flashy, gadget-filled ride, suitable for a super hero, by starting with a 1955 Lincoln Futura Concept Car. Although several replicas of this iconic car have been built, there's only one original, and it's in the Sweet 18 collection at Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale auction. The highest bidder on the Batmobile will not only own a piece of TV history, but he will own a car that has plenty of star power. Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing On its own, the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, is a Blue-chip collector car. With its sports car appearance and signature lift-up gullwing doors, it has a timeless design that will always be a coveted addition to any collection. This particular 300 SL is silver with red interior, and includes a matching set of leather traveling cases. However, what adds additional value to this car is its original owner. It was purchased new by film legend Clark Gable. Imagine sitting in the same seat as Rhett Butler. Hemi Cuda In 1971, as the muscle car era was drawing to a close, emphasis was diverted from performance to fuel economy. It was the last year of the legendary Hemi 426 engine, and only a few people opted for the top-of-the-line power plant. This was particularly true for convertibles, such as the Plymouth Cuda, because only 11 buyers ordered it with a drop top. Therefore, the value of these cars has risen above $1 million, with one Cuda netting over $2.5 million in a 2010 auction. Joining this year's Barrett-Jackson Salon Collection is a Plum Crazy Purple 1971 Hemi Cuda convertible, with plain-looking hub caps and no flashy exterior marking. The only clue to its significance is the large hood scoop with the small lettering "Hemi Cuda," which many consider to be the holy grail of muscle cars. |
