About 'toyota yaris red'|2007 Toyota Yaris Hatchback Review
There is a rather thin and homogeneous segment of the population that is in the business of reviewing cars. That is why sometimes it is important to look outside the usual marketing, P.R. and hype hoopla surrounding new cars and seek an "alternative" perspective. And boy we have an alternative perspective here. Michael Bennett is 29 years old and is currently living in the automotive heartland of Newport Beach. His personal ride of choice is a nearly new VW Rabbit ("a lady never tells her age," he demurs) but his love of vehicles runs the gamut as long as it is not one of the 12 foot long "socially irresponsible vehicles" that are so common in his neighborhood. Call him a car guy with a green heart. It is not Michael's unique past, personality or talents that set him apart but it is in fact his brilliant manner of verbalizing his inner monologue that makes him so hard to miss. Oh yeah, that and the fact that he is 6 foot 2 with a laugh that is either grumbly or giggly. (He is more noticeable when he giggles, as you could imagine.) Here are some of Michael's thoughts of what he saw at the 2009 Orange County Auto Show. Beware automakers. Michael was there. And he noticed everything. Let's start with some of the shocks Michael felt at the Orange County Auto Show like finding that he really liked (gasp! horror!) a Taurus! "When I heard about the New Taurus all I thought was 'lipstick on a pig.' While the exterior styling may be a bit boring the interior is like a new world! The dash is revolutionary because it gives you the feeling of being pulled forward but in a positive and liberating way. This car made me forget I was in a Ford and that I usually hate Fords." While Michael did once own a Ford F-series pickup, he thought that the wood paneling used in the interior of the 2010 model looked like something "stripped off the outside of a pool table." As he poked the buttons and cast his glare upon every aspect of the 2010 F-150 he then opened the center console lid. "What is this? That's big enough for smuggling circus midgets (ed: sorry, little people)!" As we passed the Fusions (not overly impressed) Michael noticed a line of lime-green Fiestas sitting outside. "Uck! It looks like someone had too many Mojitos and threw up all over it." Maybe Ford should re-think bringing that shade Stateside for the June 2010 launch. But easily Michael's favorite at the Ford stand was the Mustang. He purred just a little bit as he stroked all the fine plastic, leather and metals in the interior. I thought it couldn't get weirder until he said, "this car is pure rock n' roll. If I had a date with Tommy Lee this is the car I would drive. It is the utmost in trashy chic." Enough said. To catch all of the bon mots that flow so freely out of Michael's mouth is a frenetic business. As we passed the Lincoln stand he bellowed a little too loudly that, "I think this company is done for." True Michael, but can you use your indoor voice when we are standing next to a Lincoln Representative? Poor man probably thought he was hours from being laid off. Next to come under Michael's ire was poor old Kia. First came the Forte Koup, "I would rather have a simple sedan rather than a "Koup" that is trying that hard to be something it so clearly isn't." The "trying too hard" theme continued onto the interiors of the two Soul models we sat in. The Soul ! with its upholstery that looks like something your Nana would crochet for you at Christmastime drew a simple "yuck" while the retina burning overload that is the red interior of the Soul Sport model got this reaction. "First off it looks like someone spilled sticky Sangria all over the dash and doors. The seats are uncomfortable; it isn't wide enough for two passengers even in the back and why is it a box when there is no space? Where did the space all go?" While Michael isn't a huge fan of supersize SUVs he was taken immediately by the heft and chunky styling of the 2010 Dodge Ram Pickup truck. "Luxurious but not overdone," is how he described it initially. He loved the solidity and simplicity of the controls as well as the whole macho pheromone given off by the pickup. Things could be better over at Toyota to Michael's view. Once a big fan of the Celica he now finds their models desperately boring. When sitting in the rather confusingly styled interior of the Yaris Michael had this to say, "When you put it into drive I hope it teleports you to another planet where you have the sense to buy a better car. There's not even room in the back seat for Uhura from "Star Trek" to tell you which planet you are on." Yes, that was his actual off the cuff remark. As he left the poor light-blue Yaris in tears he sauntered over to the all new Venza. As he inspected the interior and exterior he said, "Are they serious? You would need a six shot of Espresso to stay awake behind the wheel of this thing. And all these Toyotas, even the Highlander, have such frenetic dash designs you never know which button to press first. No wonder parents are stressed out!" But there was a magic nugget to be found on the Toyota stand and its name was the 2010 4Runner. "This has always been their best product and this just improves on its excellence. I would buy one. And at around $32,000 well loaded it is a bargain. Yet again, this works as it is a far simpler design." Moving to the Subaru stand Michael was due for another shocker. He has always had an irrational fear and hatred of Subarus. (Okay, he still hates the Forester.) But when he looked at the interior and exterior styling of the Outback wagon something in him changed. I could even tell that he looked like a man who was home or was at least very comfortable. Not easy with a man that tall. "I love this car. It's not overdone. It's spacious, comfy and there is plenty of headroom. It is also chic, stylish and most importantly very economical. A great choice for people tired of boring old SUV's" (Unless they are VW Touareg's which are apparently stylish enough to pass Michael's standards despite being totally fuel inefficient.) As we made our rounds through the German bad boys of BMW and Audi Michael first had this to say about the 1-series, "this is pure 1980's BMW nostalgia and I love it for that." As I sauntered over to the Audi stand Michael drooled over a convertible 6-series. He thinks this would make a fine midlife crisis car, you know, someday. Michael's favorite at the Audi stand was the A5 due to the exterior styling being "classy and understated" while the interior shared those traits only to add a hefty dose of "really comfortable." Seemed like the perfect car for a cross country road trip. Our final stop was set to be a test drive for Michael in the new 2010 Fiesta. I hoped it would go better than his rather negative first impression but I learned a long time to never try and control Michael's opinions. Right before we headed outside me made a stop to sit in the pretty new 2010 Mazda 3. That poor little car didn't know what hit it from the invectives that flew out of Michael's mouth. Here is the watered down, family friendly version, "I can barely fit into this car with the seat pushed all the way back and I am only 6 foot 2 thanks to this overwhelmingly forward sitting and bumpy dash. The seat supports the wrong part of your back and my head is going through the roof. (ed: yes, we adjusted all the controls). This is the perfect car for people who are 5 foot 2 and headless." Finally the time came for Michael to test drive the Fiesta and even though he wanted to drive the standard manual transmission model (which has a much more powerful 1.6 liter 4 as opposed to the anemic auto equipped 1.4 that Michael drove. The U.S. will probably just get the 1.6. Hopefully.) Getting in he was impressed by the room, the visibility and that it had a standard telescoping steering wheel to help him get comfortable. (How he got comfortable in a Fiesta and not a 3 is beyond me.) As we started the drive things seemed like they were going well as Michael tested out the surprisingly powerful and clear standard audio system and was enjoying the taut European feel handling. But then he hit the gas pedal. And nothing happened. (I guess 93 horsepower does that to you.) "The handling was great but it just wasn't as fun as I thought it would be. And the automatic is just downright awful." (I grant you his opinions may have been totally different in the manual Fiesta with the larger engine but Ford can't afford to launch a "bad" automatic version of the Fiesta in this country.) Now this completes part one of The Alternative Auto Show Views of Michael Bennett. Next Stop: The 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show. Lord help them. And come on. You haven't even heard his thoughts on GM and Chrysler products yet. |
